What it really costs to study abroad from Nigeria

Almost every conversation we have starts with the same question: how much do I actually need? Here is an honest breakdown, including the costs people forget.

Tuition is only part of it

The advertised tuition fee is the number everyone fixes on, but it is rarely more than half of your first-year outlay. You also need living costs, the visa fee, a health surcharge or insurance, flights, and the money you must be able to show as proof of funds. Build your budget around the total, not the headline.

Proof of funds is not a fee — but you still need it

This is the part most people misunderstand. Proof of funds is money you must demonstrate you have, usually held for a set period in an acceptable account. You are not paying it to anyone. But if you cannot evidence it in the required form, your visa will be refused no matter how good your offer letter is. Every country sets its own amount, holding period and rules about whose account it may sit in.

The costs people forget

Credential evaluation (for example WES for Canada), English test fees and possible retakes, document courier charges, biometrics appointments, attestation or apostille fees, accommodation deposits, and the first month or two of living costs before any part-time work starts. Individually small, collectively significant.

Do not budget on part-time work

Most student visas permit limited part-time work, and many students do work. But you should never plan your finances assuming that income will cover tuition. Immigration authorities do not accept it as evidence of funds, and neither should you.

Cheaper destinations are real options

If budget is your binding constraint, look seriously at Germany, Cyprus, Malta and Spain before assuming the UK or US. Public universities in Germany charge little or no tuition. Cyprus and Malta have materially lower living costs. The trade-offs are real, but so are the savings.
